Modelling the Battlespace for Better Situational AwarenessSince 1991, the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation and Missile Center (CCDC AMC) and the Program Executive Office, Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI), have provided visual, predictive signature, lethality and system effectiveness modeling against multiple threat targets. The CCDC AvMC and PEO STRI utilize their joint program, the Virtual Targets Program, to provide predictive visual and signature modeling for these purposes. These modeling processes can provide dependable predictive signature models that can be used to provide an assessment of weapons systems capabilities when no actual threat hardware is available for testing, allowing for simulations of environments and terrains of contested and denied area environments, and also provide predictive modeling for building threat representative surrogates when hardware is essential for testing.
The modeling and simulation capabilities provide end-to-end weapons systems simulations and modeling and simulation of threats and their capabilities. Each of these modeling and simulation capabilities allows the weapons system developer to not only assess capabilities through simulation in synthetic environments, but also optimize performance while reducing cost and time.
The modeling and simulation capabilities extend from the weapon system development to the threat. As threats are becoming more complex, efforts are currently under way to capture the appropriate facets of these systems through modeling and simulation to better design weapons systems to defeat them. Through this modeling and simulation, visual and predictive signature modeling development is also employed to capture and replicate dominate visual, infrared and millimeter wave features that allow for building threat representative surrogates for hardware testing in addition to simulation.
The group not only models the target signatures, but also the environment the target is in. The Virtual Targets Program modeling process can utilize data from field collection events on US test ranges to map and model contested and denied access environments. These empirical data sets are collected in order to develop a terrain with similar classification maps and features to replicate the areas of interest. Subsequent models are used to develop determine how well a weapons system performs against a variety of targets and in these certain environments. At the engineering level, this means performing trade studies that allow the missile developer to take advantage of the performance of each sub-system in a simulated or virtual environment. At the system evaluation level, this means merging data to ensure the weapons system requirements and performance parameters are attained.
The final lesson learned in this paper is that the developer and evaluator rely heavily on simulation results and faster development times must be achieved. This assists in understanding how the system performance is driven by the simulation and its inputs, and allows for a better understanding of the results for a more effective system to be delivered to the user. This paper will discuss the methodology to meet the emerging threats of tomorrow with the technical simulation capabilities available today.Chairperson -
