As the 2019 Committee Chair I am so pleased to be a part of this year's exhibition and conference, which will bring together the international military and civil defence simulation, training and education community in Stockholm.
The theme for ITEC 2019 – ‘interoperable by design: connecting people, technology, and nations’ is one that is of utmost importance to me as a Principal Member of the Technical Staff in Applied Cognitive Science at Sandia National Laboratories.
We in the simulation, training and education community know how important the idea of connection is. While we continue to push boundaries in terms of technology innovations, it is easy to fall into stove piped development cycles that may deliver cutting edge modelling and simulation technologies but fail to fully exploit the value of connectivity.
Cooperation and collaboration beyond the status quo will prove the tipping point for taking our sector into the coming decades. The ability to deliver multi-tier training solutions that pull together augmented and virtual reality with AI and the human factors that underlie all training processes will require input from all areas of our community, reflecting the ethos of interoperability and joint training methods so valued by our end users.
To this end, our committee has focused on curating a conference program that connects research and innovation with lessons learned from experience. ITEC conference delegates will enjoy a forward-leaning technical program as well as the new addition of extended abstract conference proceedings and a new Best Paper Award review process and subcommittee. It has been my charge as Committee Chair to ensure that the quality and excellence of the ITEC technical program continues to grow, and by instituting these accomplishments it is my hope that our delegates will more easily access and share what they have learned from, and with each other.
The ITEC exhibition and conference is unique in its ability to bring together the brightest minds in our industry to collaborate, connect, and tackle these challenges together. I look forward to welcoming you all to Stockholm in May and anticipate great things from our time there.
