Dr Kalle Oskari Saastamoinen is an AI researcher at the Simulator Centre of Excellence, Army Academy, Finnish Defence Forces. He holds a PhD from Lappeenranta University of Technology. His research focuses on generative AI, simulation-based training, wargaming and decision support, particularly AI-assisted scenario generation and after-action review.

His NATO research activities include participation in MSG-232, “Establishing an M&S Ecosystem to support Multi-Domain Operations (MDO),” and MSG-247, “Generative Artificial Intelligence for Modelling and Simulation.” He also contributed to SAS-181, “Exploiting Reinforcement Learning to Achieve Decision Advantage,” and co-authored related research on reinforcement learning for defence and security.

He is a co-developer of INFOPLAY, an offline-capable platform for AI-assisted information environment simulation in military and civil-preparedness exercises. His current work explores AI-assisted playbook generation, combining locally deployed language models with structured exercise data while retaining human oversight, quality assurance and approval.
